Eliminating Gum Disease for Lasting Oral and Overall Health

If your gums bleed during daily brushing and flossing, you may have gum disease. Periodontal (gum) disease is an oral infection that attacks the gums and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Plaque carries toxins and bacteria that begin to irritate and inflame the gums as it forms above and below the gumline. Irritated gums pull away from the enamel, creating periodontal pockets where more plaque and bacteria gather. When left alone, the infection can reach the tooth roots, and gain access to the body through the bloodstream. Medical and dental evidence suggests that some heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and pregnancy issues can be linked to gum disease.

During examinations, we use digital imaging for accurate diagnosis of teeth, gums, and jawbone. These images are incredibly useful for helping identify bone loss, looking for warnings signs, and measuring pocket depths. If we find gum disease is present, we’ll work closely with you to create an effective plan for treatment.

What Gum Disease Treatments Do You Offer?

The goal of treating gum disease is to stop the infection while removing toxic plaque and tartar buildup. This often involves deep cleaning the pockets around teeth to prevent damage from spreading to surrounding tissues and bone. You have the best chance for successful treatment when you adopt a strong routine of daily oral hygiene, stop smoking, and manage health conditions that may affect your dental health.

Nonsurgical treatments for treating the early stages of gum disease:

Tooth Scaling: Scaling helps remove tartar and bacterial plaque from the enamel surfaces and beneath the gum line. Our dentists can perform scaling using advanced tools such as an ultrasonic device.

Root planning: Root planing smooths the root surfaces, helping stop any further buildup of bacteria and tartar. It also removes bacterial byproducts that cause inflammation that can also delay healing.

Antibiotics: We may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics to help control bacterial infection. These could include antibiotic mouthwash or a gel containing antibiotics to apply between your teeth and gums or into the pockets after a deep cleaning.

Maintenance care: Regardless of your severity of gum disease, we recommend you follow up with maintenance treatments. This includes visiting our office for cleanings and examination as frequently as every three months instead of every six.

Surgical procedures for addressing moderate to severe forms of gum disease are also available at our office. To discover your options, we encourage you to contact our practice today!

Treatment After Tooth Loss

Dental implants are titanium posts that serve as artificial tooth roots once surgically inserted into the jawbone by one of our skilled dentists. Living tissue and bone fuse with the implant(s) in a bonding process called osseointegration. It is through this fusing that dental implants become a permanent part of your jawbone. Once attached to your custom crown, bridge, or denture restoration, implants can provide a lifelong tooth replacement.

When teeth are lost, so are their roots, and the longer they go unreplaced, the more it can impact your oral and overall health. For example, your jawbone needs constant stimulation from tooth roots to remain strong and healthy. Without this, the bone begins to shrink, impacting chewing, speaking, digestion, and natural facial features.

Replacing missing teeth permanently with dental implants provides many benefits. From restoring dental and oral health, to renewing function, beauty, and improving overall quality of life.

Types of Implant Restorations

Depending on your needs for tooth replacement, we can offer the following restorations supported by dental implants:

  • Crowns for replacing a single missing tooth when attached to one dental implant
  • Fixed bridges can restore two or more lost teeth in a row using two implant posts
  • Partial dentures for restoring multiple missing teeth in your smile
  • Full dentures that can replace an entire arch of lost teeth

Just as with our fillings, inlays, and onlays, each implant-supported restoration we offer is created based on your unique smile and is crafted by the hands of skilled, local lab technicians.

Who Can Get Dental Implants?

Most healthy adults can qualify for dental implants. However, you must also have strong gum and jawbone health for successful implant placement. If your jawbone is not healthy enough to hold dental implants, our dentists can perform a bone graft procedure.

I Have a Damaged Tooth – Do I Need a Crown or a Filling?

Crowns are ideal for restoring teeth that have larger amounts of damage, decay, or wear. They work by covering the entire structure of a tooth, mimicking its appeal and function. In addition to strengthening and protecting a tooth, a crown can improve shape and color.

Composite fillings are tooth-colored, resin mixtures used to fill in small spaces of enamel where decay has been removed. Fillings can repair minor chips and cracks and are also useful for cosmetic enhancement.

My Tooth Hurts – Do I Need a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is a straightforward procedure used to relieve dental pain and save damaged teeth whenever possible. If an infection has reached the inner nerves and tissues of your tooth, also known as the pulp, chances are you will need a root canal.

During root canal therapy, our dentists will remove the infected pulp and clean the root canal chamber, filling it with antibacterial material. Once dried, we will place a crown to help protect and preserve your tooth.

What if My Tooth Can’t Be Saved?

If your tooth is not salvageable, extraction may be the best solution for protecting your oral health.

At Mentor Dental Arts, we offer gentle tooth extraction procedures after trauma, advanced decay, severe gum infection, or other serious issues. If you do need an extraction, we will first numb the area thoroughly and offer sedation to help maximize your comfort. After your procedure, we will provide you with proper instructions to promote successful healing.
